In a Fear-Storm? Getting Out Is As Easy as 1-2-3!

March 26, 2010

When you are creating success, you’re going to encounter “internal” fears – modern day ‘What If?’ fears. You may even enter a fear-storm, where everything rushes in with the intention of stopping you dead in your tracks! (Isn’t it great that the ego wants to keep us tucked away in our comfort zone – not wanting us to experience the the bliss of success?)

Everyone experiences a fear-storm from time-to-time. EVERYONE!  As a matter of fact, I had a bit of a fear-storm yesterday. A friend of mine – a very successful marketing expert – had a fear-storm the day before.  Surely Bill Gates, Wayne Dyer and President Obama have their fear-storms. How you handle it will either help you climb to your peak or Keep you stay stuck in the valley.

This fear-storm doesn’t need to become a typhoon. It’s what you do with it that is the key. What’s going on that created this fear-storm? How are you going to step out of it? Do you want to rock the ego boat enough to walk through the fear-storm – weathered but wiser?

I tell clients all the time that, if they want to overcome what is holding them back they have to DO THE WORK and go right throught the middle of the challenge. Dancing along the edges will never get you to the other side! So, how do you get to the other side of the fear-storm?

It’s as Easy as 1-2-3. Here’s how!

1. Recognize that you’re in a fear-storm! Denial will only keep you in it longer. Ask youself What brought this on? Listen to yourself and honor this place – you’re not going to be here for long.

2. Recover. When the fear-storm knocks you down, be ready to get  back on your feet! KEY – You need to get out of your head. Talk it out with someone you trust ( a mentor, coach or friend)  and that is a true friend! Your true friends will tell you what you need to hear, not what you want to hear. They’ll call you on it. Accept it and learn from it.

3. Revive your idea ( your goals, your initial intentions) and run with it! You wouldn’t have entered the fear-storm if your idea wasn’t right on!See, when you get doubt and fear out of your head you can move from the comfort zone, leaving the ordinary behind to create your Extraordinary idea!

Now, how do you feel? Are you feeling more confident about going through the fear-storm? Remember, you’re not alone. All successful people have them and use the fear-storm to propel them forward rather than “sink their ship”.

Excellent article. Yes, we ALL deal with fear at one point or another. However, the more we raise our consciousness the less fear hangs around like a house guest who has overstayed their welcome.

There are real fears and imagined fear. Real fear is “if I jump off a 10 story building, I will likely hurt myself.” Real fear allows us to stay in the space of common sense. Well, at least we would hope so. :-)

Imagined fear has to do with the negative side of “What if?” as well as False Evidence Appearing Real.

When the what if’s crop up the solution is to determine what I can do (if anything) to shift from fear to curiosity.

Something that can very quickly shift the fear is to get very present in the moment. In this moment is there anything to fear? Fear is often projection into the future of what might happen, what could happen, what won’t happen.

Some of the real fears many boomers are dealing with (myself included) are the death of a parent and aging parents. One way I address this fear is to ALWAYS make sure the people I love know it.

When we move in the space of love, soul love, fear shifts into gratitude.

Thanks for the opportunity to share my thoughts.

    CHRISTINE,

    Greetings from rural Australia.

    An excellent post.

I wish more people wrote about the true path to success.

90% of it is hard slog, coping with fear, working in the dark with little feedback and somehow maintaining the daily ritual that stops you from hitting the wall by procrastinating.

For most people, very little of the path to the top is glamourous.

But once arriving, it’s very exhilarating and worth every minute of the fear we feel along the way.

But fear is a major reason people quit before they succeed. Some men and women just don’t have someone to talk to whom they trust and who will keep them motivated and moving forward.

Perhaps, after reading your post, they will see the need to find just the right person. Or two. Or three.

Again, Christine, a poignant post. Thank you.

    Take care,

    Carol

Thanks Carol and Kathleen for sharing your thoughts. Two after my own heart!

Yes, we don’t have the sabre tooth chasing us for dinner, but it is the Modern “What if?” fears that we need to understand and reprogram. Think of this… did you come up with those fears along? Why, of course not!

These fear have been programmed into our subconscious from the time were entered our world. From, “Mommy’s little angel”, to ” be careful, it’s a dangerous world out there”, “money doesn’t doesn’t grow on trees”, “if you want anything in life you have to work hard for it”, and my personal fave “what makes YOU think you can do that?”. Wow – that’s a lot of programming isn’t it?

Your open and honest comments let others know that, no matter who you are there are fears, but they can be OVERCOME!

    You both are EXTRAORDINARY!

Great article, a topic near and dear to my heart. As Kathleen mentioned, F.E.A.R. is false evidence appearing real. It is not the steps you need to take to become a success that are fearful. The fear is attributed to your perception and feelings about taking those steps. Once you reframe from a negative to a positive you are more likely to move forward.

Recognize the fear and then try to go deeper. See where it came from. Most likely it is related to a deep belief. As Christine mentioned, this is the time to talk with someone you trust. Find a mentor. Having someone to support you and to help you step out of the box is a common factor among all truly successful people. No one expects you to do it all alone.
